Attore. Comincia la sua carriera sul piccolo schermo, e con piccole produzioni cinematografiche, fino a quando John Woo lo sceglie per il suo A Better Tomorrow (Ying hung boon sik, 1986), un gangster movie ambientato a Hong Kong. La collaborazione con Woo è importante, tanto che i due lavorano insieme anche per A Better Tomorrow II (Ying hung boon sik II, 1987), The Killer (Dip huet seung hung, 1989), Once a Thief (Zong heng si hai, 1991) e Hard Bolied (Last sau san taam, 1992). Lavora con Ang Lee per La tigre e il dragone (Wo hu cang long, 2000) e con Gore Verbinski per Pirati dei Caraibi – Ai confini del mondo (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, 2007).
