Paul Schrader, sceneggiatore del cult Taxi Driver, ha stroncato sulla sua pagina Facebook il nuovo film diretto da Clint Eastwood Cry Macho, ora nelle sale e in streaming su HBO Max.

Schrader non ha apprezzato particolarmente il film, giudicandolo non idoneo in ogni suo aspetto: location, luci, sceneggiatura, set, casting e oggetti di scena. L'unico momento a suo parere interessante della pellicola è stato, nei momenti iniziali, quello della ripresa sotto l'auto di uno stivale che colpisce il suolo, sorta di stoccata ai vecchi western macho.

Paul Schrader sta ricevendo ottime recensioni per il suo ultimo film da regista, Il collezionista di carte, che vede Oscar Isaac nei panni di un veterano di guerra diventato giocatore d'azzardo. La critica internazionale invece ha giudicato il film di Clint Eastwood in maniera più moderata: ad esempio la recensione del critico di IndieWire David Ehrlich afferma che Cry Macho trova alcuni dei motivi più antichi del cinema di Eastwood migliorati con l'età.

I can appreciate the inclination to give Clint Eastwood a pass but has an important American director made a film as bad as Cry Macho since Howard Hawks' Man's Favorite Spot? It fails in every area: screenwriting, lighting, locations, sets, props, wardrobe and casting. When, early on, Eastwood employs an under the car shot of a boot hitting the ground I thought, "Great, he's going to riff on the stylizations of macho westerns"--but that was the last interesting composition in the film. Sure, Clint is given a few cliché ridden passages about the futility of machismo but these only have value because a shrunken Dirty Harry is giving voice to them. These character insights had value thirty years ago. It was like listening to a criminal apologize to the family of his victims in hopes that the judge will cut him a lesser sentence.
