La 37a edizione dei Film Independent Spirit Awards torna con un evento in presenza che si svolgerà sulla spiaggia di Santa Monica sabato 6 marzo, a sole tre settimane dalla notte degli Oscar. Molte le conferme rispetto alle nomination dei Golden Globes e dei Critics Choice, con A24 da record per le 13 nomination totali di C'mon C'mon, Zola, The Humans e Red Rocket.

Una sorpresa bellissima per l'Italia è la candidatura a Miglior film per A Chiara di Jonas Carpignano! Il film ambientato nella località calabrese di Gioia Tauro ha anche ricevuto una nomination al Miglior montaggio e alla Miglior fotografia, mentre il sestetto al Miglior film internazionale vede Compartment No. 6, Drive My Car, Parallel Mothers, Pebbles, Petite Maman e Prayers for the Stolen. 

Sono ben quattro le registe candidate per la miglior regia, ovvero Janicza Bravo per Zola, Maggie Gyllenhaal per The Lost Daughter, Lauren Hadaway per The Novice e Ninja Thyberg per Pleasure. Anche IFC Films ha ben figurato collezionando otto nomination per Catch the Fair One e The Novice. I distributori Neon e Netflix hanno raccolto nove nomination ciascuno nelle categorie film e TV, mentre HBO ha ottenuto sette nomination.

Il budget limite per i film candidabili era di 22,5 milioni di dollari, il che significa che non troviamo in lista forti contendenti nella corsa agli Academy Awards come, oltre a Belfast di Focus, The Power of the Dog, Tick, Tick, Boom, Don't Look Up o The Harder They Fall di Netflix.
